The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park extends 2,300 kilometers along Queensland's coast, but the Whitsunday Islands sit within its southern third, where continental shelf geology creates shallow fringing reefs accessible within a 90-minute sail from Airlie Beach.
These reefs formed over 8,000 years as sea levels stabilized after the last glacial maximum, allowing coral polyps to colonize the drowned headlands of what were once coastal hills.
